Westerdeichstrich · Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
North of Büsum, directly on the North Sea coast and the unique Wadden Sea National Park, lies the holiday resort of Westerdeichstrich. The landmark of the holiday village of Westerdeichstrich is the Margaretha windmill. The 4-kilometer-long beach of Westerdeichstrich is divided into a textile beach and a nudist beach. At both beaches there are separate dog beach areas. The dog beaches are located on the dike and are so-called green beaches. Each has direct access to the mudflats or the sea. Since the Westerdeichstrich dog beaches are located at the Wadden Sea nature park, a leash requirement applies everywhere here too. Also at the dog beach and on the mudflats. Sanitary facilities, showers, and food and drink options are available near the dog beaches. During our visit, some beach chairs (Strandkörbe) could also be rented at the dog beach. | Parking: approx. 300 meters | Beach fee person/dog: Yes/No | Beach/water condition: grass/mudflats | Restrooms available: Yes | Food and drink: Yes | Wi-Fi at the beach: No | Leash required on the beach: Yes
In busy areas of Schleswig-Holstein, dogs must be leashed. In forests, dogs may only be taken along on a leash and on forest paths, year-round. On beaches with lots of bathers, dogs are banned from 1 April to 31 October except on designated dog beaches; municipalities may set different rules. Violations can be fined.
This is a simplified overview, not legal advice. For binding rules in 2026 where you live and walk your dog, contact your local authority (e.g. municipal public order office).
