Tönning · Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
At first glance, Hundestrand Tönning does not look like a classic dog beach. At Hundestrand Tönning we are not directly on the North Sea but on the bank of the Eider river on the Eiderstedt peninsula. The Eider flows into the North Sea in a funnel shape. Direct access to the water is unfortunately not possible. So this dog beach is really more of a dog meadow. If you would like to take a longer walk with your dog, you can do so in the Katinger Watt (on a leash, please). The Katinger Watt is located on the L305 in Tönning. If you would like to learn more about the mudflats, visit the NABU Nature Center Katinger Watt. In the information center and on the guided tours through the mudflats, leashed dogs are welcome visitors. As already described, Hundestrand Tönning is more of a dog meadow. Of course, there are also real sandy dog beaches on the Eiderstedt peninsula. You will find dog beaches in Vollerwiek and several in St. Peter-Ording. | Parking: no direct parking | Beach fee person/dog: No/No | Beach/water conditions: no access to the water | Restrooms available: Yes | Dining: Yes | Wi-Fi on beach: No | Leash required on beach: No
In busy areas of Schleswig-Holstein, dogs must be leashed. In forests, dogs may only be taken along on a leash and on forest paths, year-round. On beaches with lots of bathers, dogs are banned from 1 April to 31 October except on designated dog beaches; municipalities may set different rules. Violations can be fined.
This is a simplified overview, not legal advice. For binding rules in 2026 where you live and walk your dog, contact your local authority (e.g. municipal public order office).
