The city of Flensburg offers its residents and visitors two designated dog beaches, at Ostseebad Flensburg and in Flensburg Solitüde. In addition, dogs are allowed on all beaches from October 1 to March 31. A special designation as an off-leash area is not required for this. Besides the dog beaches in Flensburg, the city also offers six dog exercise areas. A bit farther away is the roughly 20-hectare dog forest in Glücksburg. The Flensburg Ostseebad dog beach is located in the Nordstadt district of Flensburg. The beach is free to use and well visited in summer. It is located south of the pier. The Flensburg Ostseebad dog beach is a sandy beach and is described by visitors as a “lovely beach, without trash or broken glass.” A snack bar/kiosk takes care of your needs. If you arrive by car, you will find a parking lot nearby. Another dog beach is located in Flensburg Solitüde. The Flensburg Solitüde dog beach is a sandy beach. It is the small beach section on the left side of the Solitüde beach resort. Food and drink offerings can be found at the beach bistro. You will also find sanitary facilities nearby. Visitors describe the Flensburg Solitüde dog beach as “small but nice and completely sufficient.” The dog beach is about 300 meters from the parking lot. Visitor opinions on both dog beaches in Flensburg are consistently positive. Cleanliness is highlighted. For some visitors, the exercise area for the dogs could be a bit larger. | Parking: approx. 200 meters | Beach fee person/dog: No/No | Beach/water type: Sand/Shallow | Restrooms available: Yes | Food and drink: Yes | Leash required on beach: No | Parking: approx. 500 meters | Beach fee person/dog: Yes/No | Beach/water type: Sand/Shallow water | Restrooms available: Yes | Food and drink: Yes | Leash required on beach: No
In busy areas of Schleswig-Holstein, dogs must be leashed. In forests, dogs may only be taken along on a leash and on forest paths, year-round. On beaches with lots of bathers, dogs are banned from 1 April to 31 October except on designated dog beaches; municipalities may set different rules. Violations can be fined.
This is a simplified overview, not legal advice. For binding rules in 2026 where you live and walk your dog, contact your local authority (e.g. municipal public order office).
