Eckernförde Dog Beach

Eckernförde · Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Description

The city of Eckernförde lies northeast of the state capital Kiel. Eckernförde is located on the Baltic Sea, directly on Eckernförde Bay. Eckernförde has a sandy beach about 4 kilometers long, the main beach, and the roughly one-kilometer-long Südstrand with the Eckernförde dog beach. You'll find the Eckernförde dog beach on the B76. If you come from the direction of Kiel, you drive past the WTD 71. Shortly after, a small road (Preußerstraße) branches off before the railroad tracks. The entrance to the dog beach is there. There is also a sign. The dog beach is about 160 meters long. The dog beach is a wide sandy beach and the water is, as is usual on the Baltic Sea, quite shallow. In good weather, the dog beach is also well attended. You'll find restrooms right near the Eckernförde dog beach. Visitors to the Eckernförde dog beach find the beach very clean, and people are “relaxed” with their dogs. Parking is somewhat more difficult. Further north is the parking lot at the promenade. You can also use the other beach sections from the beginning of November to the end of March. Tourist attractions include the seawater wave pool, the Erlebnishafen (adventure harbor) and the Baltic Sea Info Center with information about the marine animals of the Baltic Sea. The nearest dog beaches are the Gröhnwold dog beach in Schwedeneck and, to the north, the Klein Waabs dog beach. | Parking: approx. 500 meters | Beach fee person/dog: No/No | Beach/water type: Sandy beach/shallow water | Restrooms available: Yes | Dining: No | Leash required on beach: No

Breeding & nesting season (orientation)

In busy areas of Schleswig-Holstein, dogs must be leashed. In forests, dogs may only be taken along on a leash and on forest paths, year-round. On beaches with lots of bathers, dogs are banned from 1 April to 31 October except on designated dog beaches; municipalities may set different rules. Violations can be fined.

This is a simplified overview, not legal advice. For binding rules in 2026 where you live and walk your dog, contact your local authority (e.g. municipal public order office).
