Dog Beach on Sylt

Sylt · Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Description

As the largest North Frisian island, Sylt is an island that offers above all many spa resorts in towns such as Westerland or Kampen. On the island we find a maritime climate that is strongly influenced by the Gulf Stream. The island of Sylt was long considered the “dog island.” At almost all dog beaches, dogs were allowed to run off-leash. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case and more and more restrictions have been added. There are a total of 15 different dog beaches on Sylt, and along a sandy beach more than 40 kilometers long from north to south there are around 12,000 beach chairs (Strandkörbe), also at the dog beach. Alongside the “normal” beaches, the nudist beaches on Sylt are very popular. For visits with a dog, there are special dog nudist beaches. You will find more dog beaches on the other North Frisian islands. Below is an overview of the individual dog beaches on Sylt, from north (List) to south (Hörnum). The village of List lies at the upper “tip” of the island of Sylt and is the northernmost point of Germany. The west beach is surrounded by a rugged dune landscape, and the North Sea offers the chance to swim regardless of ebb and flow.

Breeding & nesting season (orientation)

In busy areas of Schleswig-Holstein, dogs must be leashed. In forests, dogs may only be taken along on a leash and on forest paths, year-round. On beaches with lots of bathers, dogs are banned from 1 April to 31 October except on designated dog beaches; municipalities may set different rules. Violations can be fined.

This is a simplified overview, not legal advice. For binding rules in 2026 where you live and walk your dog, contact your local authority (e.g. municipal public order office).
